Algefiber

Algefiber is a by-product of extracting carrageenan, a thickener used in food, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, from red seaweed.  With a consistency similar to store brought brown sugar, Algefiber is used by farmers and topsoil dealers to boost soil pH, calcium, magnesium, and organic matter.  Plant hormones naturally present in this by-product increase plant root development and promote plant growth.

  • Lime equivalence:  12 tons of Algefiber to 1 ton of commercial lime.
  • pH:  8.6
  • Organic matter:  123 lbs/ton
  • Calcium:  21.7 lbs/ton
  • Magnesium:  10.3 lbs/ton

Algefiber is spread through rear-discharge slinger manure spreaders or spin spreaders at rates between 5 and 15 tons/acre, depending on soil need.  Actual application rates should be determined by soil test results.  Available in mid-coast Maine.  Contact your New England Organics Algefiber Product Specialist today at 800-933-6474.
