Environmental Management System (EMS)
Hawk Ridge Compost Facility Signs on to EMS
On January 19, 2007, Hawk Ridge Compost Facility (HRCF) signed a Letter of Understanding with the National Biosolids Partnership (NBP) to develop an NBP Environmental Management System (EMS), with the intent to achieve third-party certification for its excellent biosolids management program. Hawk Ridge Compost Facility specifically committed to meet the requirements for managing an excellent biosolids program, to implement an Environmental Management System, and to follow the NBP’s National Code of Good Practice. The EMS Program works to help organizations:
- Measure and maintain consistent product quality and service
- Continue to maintain an excellent record of regulatory compliance
- Operate in a sustainable manner
- Improve communications with interested parties
After a year long effort involving learning about EMS programs, evaluating systems, and documenting operations and procedures at the facility, HRCF declared the program operational on May 2, 2008. Internal auditing of the EMS took place in July of 2008. A 3rd party verification took place January 5 -7, 2009 and New England Organics’ Hawk Ridge Compost Facility became the first privately operated facility in the nation to receive the NBP’s EMS Certification on January 31, 2009.
