Research & Development

An essential component of our business is developing diverse and sustainable beneficial use outlets for the materials that we manage.  New England Organics employs professionals in agri-science, geology, engineering and environmental science.  Our staff professionals are active members and officers in trade associations to keep abreast of the latest in research and technologies.

We complement our in house expertise by working with universities and contract consultants to investigate material properties and develop new outlets.  For example, our team consulted with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection on the development of “BMP’s for Erosion and Sedimentation Control” and worked with contractors to perfect application techniques such as terra seeding and blower truck applications for compost.  Our experience combined with the needs of our customers has led us to develop products for use in trail stabilization, riding rings, wetlands remediation and bioretention cells.

Our academic research efforts have ranged from the evaluation of geotechnical properties of materials to a comparative analysis of alternative liming sources.  We have worked with university partners and the cooperative extension to complete agricultural field trials to ascertain the effect of different residuals on crop yields and nutrient uptakes in plants.  Again, in response to the needs of our customers, our most recent efforts involve developing new products for farmers to use as animal bedding.
